good morning, ladies and gentlemen. i’d like to share my teaching dream with you. but before that, i want to say something about the beginning of this dream. in march this year, three teachers from australia came to our school. during the meeting, we exchanged a lot about education. i found that though we have almost the same teaching philosophy, we have different routines. what impressed me most was that their schools end at 3:00 in the afternoon and have no night classes. i can’t tell which kind of routine is better, but the sharp contrast made me think about a better education. the following is a dreamy school in my mind, in which there is no pressure but pleasure.
in this school, the buildings are well designed, close to nature. in the morning, children can read while enjoying the beautiful sunrise. in the evening, they can exercise by the lake reflecting the amazing sunset. in the spring, they can go to the wild, lie on the lawn, and watch the kite flying in the blue sky. in the summer, they can go to the forest, live in a cabin, and listen to the rhythm of the rain. …
students are free but polite and they respect each other. they can leave at 4:00 every afternoon, or perhaps earlier. they have the freedom to organize time. they can go to the library, go to the lab, the computer rooms or the playground. they’re self-motivated and have a strong thirst for knowledge. and there are no frequent exams and rankings. students won’t be forced to wear uniforms everyday, and there is no required hair style. everyday is so colorful that they are looking forward to the next day when going to bed at night,
every teacher in this school can give a course as they like. there is no tedious rating, no scraps of quantitative management and no rigid standard. teachers can fully display their personality in class, and they feel very happy and content to teach. every morning, on thoughts of giving lessons, they are excited. after class, they are delighted , with smiles on their faces. some experts, scholars and masters are also visiting teachers in this school.yang zhenning can give physics classes for a day. yi zhongtian opens lectures on chinese culture for a week. speaking of music, we can ask wang lihong to give music lectures, just as he did in oxford university. if necessary, we can also invite david beckham to speak something about the world cup …
the principal of the school focuses on education rather than waste time in endless meetings and social activities. teachers’ wages are not high but enough to live comfortably. there are no other things to do except to teach. there are no paper requirements, no titles and no ranks because they don’t need to be judged by those things. almost every teacher is a well-known scholar and master in a particular field. a language teacher may be a writer at the same time. a math teacher may try to overcome a world-class guess. a physics teacher can win invention awards and a music teacher may return from an international music competition again.
in short, in this school, the principal is satisfied, the teachers are happy and the students are joyful. that’s my dream.

a brother like that
a friend of mine named paul received an automobile from his brother as a christmas present。 on christmas eve when paul came out of his office, a street urchin was walking around the shiny new car, admiring it。
"is this your car, mister?" he said。
paul nodded。 "my brother gave it to me for christmas。" the boy was astounded。 "you mean your brother gave it to you and it didn’t cost you nothing? boy, i wish 。 。 。" he hesitated。
of course paul knew what he was going to wish for。 he was going to wish he had a brother like that。 but what the lad said jarred paul all the way down to his heels。
"i wish," the boy went on, "that i could be a brother
like that。"
paul looked at the boy in astonishment, then impulsively he added, "would you like to take a ride in my car?"
"oh yes, id love that。"
after a short ride, the boy turned with his eyes aglow, said, "mister, would you mind driving in front of my house?"
paul smiled a little。 he thought he knew what the lad wanted。 he wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big automobile。 but paul was wrong again。 "will you stop where those two steps are?" the boy asked。
he ran up the steps。 then in a little while paul heard him ing back, but he was not ing fast。 he was carrying his little crippled brother。 he sat him down on the bottom step, then sort of squeezed up against him and pointed to the car。
"there she is, buddy, just like i told you upstairs。 his brother gave it to him for christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent。 and some day im gonna give you one just like it 。 。 。 then you can see for yourself all the pretty things in the christmas windows that ive been trying to tell you about。"
paul got out and lifted the lad to the front seat of his car。 the shining-eyed older brother climbed in beside him and the three of them began a memorable holiday ride。 that christmas eve, paul learned what jesus meant when he said: "it is more blessed to give 。 。 。 "

five score years ago, a great american, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the emancipation proclamation. this momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. it came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.
but one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the negro is still not free. one hundred years later, the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. one hundred years later, the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. one hundred years later, the negro is still languishing in the corners of american society and finds himself an exile in his own land. so we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.
in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall heir. this note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
it is obvious today that america has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. instead of honoring this sacred obligation, america has given the negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds." but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. we refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.
so we have come to cash this check -- a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

change the ingredients of your life
this is a glass of water, tasteless, right? however if you add sugar, it will taste sweet, but if you add vinegar, it will become bitter. the same is true with our life____ the flavor is created by our choices.
if kindness is added to a strange you will have a friend; but if hostility is added, you will have an enemy. if love is added to a pile of red bricks you will have a home, but if hatred is add to those bricks , you will have an concentration camp.
so my dear friends, never complain that life is boring and the world is disappointing. if don't like the taste of your life, change the ingredients. three year ago, i weighed more than 100 hundred kilograms which caused significant embarrassment and frustration in my life. like always failing my p.e examinations, like always being laughed at by girls, like being terrified to speak in public. it was my grandmother's encouragement that revived from my passive attitude to become confident in myself. she said “ my dear, if you can't change you figure, why not treat it as your own style. so i began to cautiously employ the new way of thinking. by choosing to change my outlook on life, i developed the confidence to make a difference and finally i found a totally new world. so my dear friend, if faith, hope, love, endurance are added to your life, you will find the confidence to conquer your limitation and embrace new challenges. and hopefully with my speech included, you will have a fantastic speech contest.

dear all,
experience makes you succeedi still remembered the first time when i becamea technical secondary school teacher of english literature. it seemed that ithappened yesterday.
at that day, i got quite ready and i had the confidence to be a goodteacher. i arrived at the classroom, eager to share my knowledge and experiencewith all the students of my class. having prepared for two days, i had no doubtto hold their attention and to impress on them my admiration for theliterature.
“stand up!” the monitor spoke loudly. the entire class stood up as ientered the classroom. i was a little puzzled, but quickly that awkwardness wasover, i regained my calmness and began my well-prepared lecture, sure to gaintheir respect--- or even their admiration. ‘i’m your english, miss jiang. todaywe are going to learn . . . ’ i was very pleased with work . as the bell rang, iwent back to my office full of a sense of achievement. the following day when iread my students’ diaries, the rosy glow was gradually replaced by a strongsense of sadness. the first diary said, “our literature teacher didn’t teach usanything today. perhaps her next lecture would be better.” greatly surprised, iread diary after diary, each expressed a similar theme. “didn’t i teach themanything? i described the entire framework and laid the background for thepassage we would study in class,” i puzzled. “how should they say i taught themnothing?”
it was a long term, and it gradually became clear that my ideas abouteducation weren’t the same as those of my students. i thought a teacher’s jobwas to raise interesting questions and provide enough background so thatstudents could draw their own conclusions. my students thought a teacher’s jobwas to provide exact information as directly and clearly as possible. what adifference! i tell myself i can handle it.’ compared to what others have beenthrough , i’m fortunate. thinking of these sentences i felt something importantstruck me. i believe my life would not be that bad and it was proved to be true.later during my life and work i always told myself ‘i can handle it.’ when myown goals seemed far off or when my problems seemed too overwhelming. and everytime i said it, i always came back to my senses.
now the experience with my students has made me learn a lot, and made me bea better english teacher.
the following year, it was september 10th. i went to class as well. when istepped into the class, i felt surprised. there was a post card on the table, but i didn’t show it on my face. i began teaching lessons. after the class, iwalked out of the class with a card in my hand. i opened the card in the office,it was a music card with words on it. it said ‘many thanks to you, miss jiang.we all love you we like your teaching.’ i was impressed by the words. how honestand simple the words were. hot tears couldn’t help dropping. at that time, i wasso proud of being an english teacher.
so here, coming to us are words that can give us strength. whatever you’regoing through, tell yourself you can handle it. tell this to yourself over andover, and it will help you get through the rough spots with little morefortitude.
